Hayes B. Gladstone, M.D.

Hayes B. Gladstone, MD is Associate Professor and  Director of the Division of Dermatologic Surgery at Stanford University. He received his MD at the University of Rochester, completed his surgical internship at the University of California San Francisco, and did three additional years of training in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. He completed a dermatology residency at the University of Washington. He then completed a fellowship at UCLA under the mentorship of world renowned dermasurgeon Ronald L. Moy, MD. This fellowship included comprehensive training in cutaneous oncology, Mohs Micrographic Surgery, facial reconstruction and cosmetic surgery. At the end of his fellowship, Dr. Gladstone received the prestigious Theodore Tromovitch Award for the best  research project in the United States. This project used computers and finite element modeling to optimize nasal reconstruction after Mohs surgery.

At Stanford, Dr. Gladstone directs the Division of Dermatologic Surgery. Serving the Greater San Francisco Bay Area and beyond, Dr. Gladstone performs Mohs micrographic surgery and advanced soft tissue reconstruction. He has a thriving cosmetic practice which includes a wide range of laser procedures, injectables such as Botox and fillers, and more advanced procedures such as liposuction, blepharoplasties and facelifts. These procedures are all performed under local anesthesia. Dr. Gladstone was recently named one of the leaders in minimally invasive facelifting under local anesthesia in an article on the history of the specialty.

Internationally, Dr. Gladstone has been invited to several countries as the featured speaker and has performed surgery. He has been co-director of surgical courses in Chile and Romania. With a colleague, he founded the Blade and Light Society which organizes humanitarian dermasurgical missions to developing countries.

Locally, Dr. Gladstone is President of the San Francisco Dermatology Society. He has been on the California Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society. He volunteers on a regular basis at the Arbor Clinic for the care of the homeless and those without insurance.

Dr. Gladstone is on the editorial board of the specialty’s journal: Dermatologic Surgery.
He has over 50 publications including 17 chapters and is co-editor of a series on cosmetic surgery. Dr. Gladstone’s research interests include laser surgery, fillers, confocal microscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of skin cancer, and virtual reality and robotics for surgery. Dr. Gladstone is also the director of the Next Step series of cosmetic dermatology courses at the Stanford University Medical Center.

Prior to medicine, Dr. Gladstone attended Tufts University where he graduated summa cum laude on his BA degree in international relations and summa cum laude on his honors thesis. He also attended the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy and received a Masters degree in international affairs with distinction. Following graduation, he worked as a sports editor and photojournalist in Colorado. He received several awards including having his photographic images in a travelling show that featured the top international young photographers (under 25). Outside of work, he enjoys many activities including alpine skiing, squash, tennis, writing short stories, classical guitar, photography, and of course the many recreational activities and cultural events that the Bay Area offers.
